Performance Transmissions
A stock transmission is built for a stock vehicle. Add power, hook up a heavy trailer or swap in a different engine, and the transmission needs to be built for the new job.
Signs you need this
- You've added power and the transmission slips or shifts soft
- You tow a boat, camper or trailer and the transmission runs hot
- You're planning an LS swap and need a transmission that fits the plan
- You want firmer shifts for the way you drive
- A stock transmission already failed behind a modified engine
What we do
- Performance transmission builds matched to your power and use
- Heavy-duty upgrades for towing
- Transmission choice and fit planning for LS swaps
- Transmission modifications, such as changes to shift firmness
- Written estimate before any work
- Road test before pickup
More about performance
We do performance transmission builds, heavy-duty towing upgrades, LS swap transmission solutions and other transmission modifications. Every build starts with a conversation about how the vehicle will actually be used.
Build it for how you'll use it
The right build depends on the job. A truck that pulls a boat to the ramp every weekend needs something different from a street car with a lot more power. Before we recommend parts, we ask about the engine, the power level, the vehicle's weight, the tires and gearing, and how you drive.
For more power, a build focuses on the parts that take the load, like the clutch packs and the hard parts around them, such as shafts and drums. The torque converter has to match the engine and how the vehicle is used, so it's chosen as part of the build, not as an afterthought.
Towing upgrades
Heat is one of the biggest threats to an automatic transmission, and towing makes a lot of it. Depending on the vehicle, a towing upgrade can include stronger internal parts, changes to how firmly it shifts and added cooling. We explain what your setup needs and what it doesn't.
LS swap transmission solutions
An LS swap is only as good as the transmission plan behind it. Things to settle before the swap:
- Which transmission fits your power, your vehicle and your budget
- How the transmission bolts up, and how the torque converter and flexplate fit
- How an electronic transmission will be controlled
- Mounts, driveshaft length, cooler lines and the speedometer signal
Modifications can affect factory or extended warranty coverage, so check yours before you build. As with every job, you get a written estimate first, and nothing is done without your OK.
Questions about performance
What transmission should I use for an LS swap?
It depends on your power level, the vehicle, whether you want an automatic or a manual, and how you plan to control an electronic transmission. Common choices include GM automatics like the 4L60E, 4L80E and 6L80, but the right one depends on your build. Talk to us before you buy parts.
Can you make my truck's transmission better for towing?
Yes, heavy-duty towing upgrades are part of what we do. What's worth doing depends on the truck and what you tow. We tell you what makes sense for your setup, and what doesn't.
Will a performance build make my transmission shift harder?
It can, and how firm it feels is part of the plan. Some people want firm, quick shifts. Others want a daily driver that still feels smooth. Tell us how you use the vehicle and we build to that.
