DT-06Transmission

CVT Repair and Service

A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, doesn't shift through fixed gears like a regular automatic. It uses a belt or chain between two pulleys that change size, so the engine can stay at a useful speed as you accelerate.

DT-06

Signs you need this

  • A shudder or judder when pulling away
  • Whining or droning that gets louder with speed
  • Engine revs rise but the car is slow to pick up speed
  • A delay when you put it in Drive or Reverse
  • A warning light or reduced power mode

What we do

  • Computer scan and road test to pin down the symptom
  • CVT fluid level and condition check
  • CVT fluid service with the fluid your manufacturer specifies
  • Checking whether your symptom matches a known issue on your model
  • Repair or replacement when the CVT is damaged, with the options in writing
  • Road test before pickup
More about cvt

CVTs are common in many sedans and small SUVs, and they need their own kind of care. We diagnose CVT problems, service them with the correct CVT fluid and handle repairs when they're needed.

How a CVT is different

A regular automatic has a set of gears and shifts between them. A CVT has no gear steps. A steel belt or chain runs between two pulleys, and the pulleys change width to change the ratio. That's why a CVT feels smooth, and why the engine sound can stay steady while you speed up. That steady sound is normal. A new whine, a shudder or a slipping feeling is not.

CVT fluid isn't regular transmission fluid

CVTs need CVT fluid, usually the specific type the manufacturer calls for. The fluid does more than lubricate. It helps the belt or chain grip the pulleys. Using the wrong fluid, or letting it wear out, can cause shudder and slipping and shorten the life of the transmission.

What a CVT repair can look like

  • Fluid service: for some milder complaints, fresh fluid of the right type is the fix.
  • Electrical and sensor repairs: CVTs depend on sensors and a computer, and a fault there can cause problems without any damage inside.
  • Replacement: when a CVT is damaged inside, a remanufactured or used unit is often the most practical fix. For some models, parts for a rebuild are limited.

Some models have known CVT problems that the manufacturer has addressed with service bulletins or software updates. Checking for those is part of a good diagnosis.

Every CVT job starts with a diagnosis and a written estimate. Nothing gets done without your OK, and if the job changes, we call first.

Questions about cvt

Do CVTs need fluid changes?

Yes. Many manufacturers list a CVT fluid change interval, and it's often shorter under severe driving like heavy traffic or towing. The fluid has to be the correct CVT type for your vehicle.

Is it normal for my CVT to sound like it isn't shifting?

Yes. A CVT has no gear steps, so the engine can hold a steady sound as you speed up. Some CVTs are programmed to feel like they shift. What's not normal is a new whine, a shudder or a feeling of slipping.

Can a CVT be rebuilt?

Some can. For many models, a remanufactured or used replacement is the more practical choice because of parts availability and cost. After the diagnosis, we tell you which options make sense for your vehicle.
