Transmission Diagnostics
Most transmission jobs should start with a diagnosis, not a guess. A slipping shift, a warning light or a new noise can come from many different causes, and some of them are small, simple fixes.
Signs you need this
- Check engine light or transmission warning light is on
- Shifts feel late, harsh or slippery
- Engine revs climb but the car doesn't pick up speed
- A delay when you shift into Drive or Reverse
- The car is stuck in one gear
- A shudder, clunk, whine or buzz you didn't have before
- Red or brown fluid spots under the car
What we do
- Computer scan of the engine and transmission for stored codes and live data
- Road test to feel the slip, shudder or bad shift for ourselves
- Fluid check: level, color, smell and what's in it
- Inspection for leaks and damaged wiring, connectors and mounts
- Electrical and solenoid testing when a code points to a circuit
- A plain-English explanation and a written estimate before any work
More about diagnostics
We scan the computer, road test the vehicle and inspect it on the lift. Then we tell you what we found in plain English and give you a written estimate. Nothing gets done without your OK.
Downtown Transmissions is a family-owned shop on State Road 7 in Plantation, a few blocks south of Broward Boulevard. We have served Broward County for 30+ years.
What a real transmission diagnosis includes
A code reader at a parts store tells you a code. It doesn't tell you why the code set. A shift solenoid code, for example, can mean a bad solenoid, a damaged wire, a corroded connector, low fluid or a problem inside the transmission. Replacing parts based on a code alone is how people end up paying twice.
Our diagnosis has three parts:
- Scan: we read the stored codes and watch live data while the vehicle runs, like fluid temperature and which gear the computer is asking for.
- Road test: we drive it the way you do, so we can feel the late shift, the slip or the shudder for ourselves.
- Inspection: we check the fluid, look for leaks, and check the wiring, connectors and mounts.
Not every shifting problem is the transmission
Some problems feel like the transmission but aren't. An engine misfire can feel like a shudder. A worn engine or transmission mount can make a normal shift feel like a clunk. Low fluid from a leak can cause slipping, and if it's caught early, fixing the leak and refilling the fluid may be all it needs.
Because we also do general auto repair, we have no reason to blame the transmission when the problem is somewhere else.
What happens after the diagnosis
You get a written estimate that explains what we found and what we recommend. Sometimes that's a fluid service, a solenoid or a leak repair. Sometimes it's a rebuild or a replacement. If it's a bigger job, we explain why and walk you through the options. If anything changes once we start, we call you first.
Questions about diagnostics
Can a transmission problem turn on the check engine light?
Yes. On most modern vehicles a computer watches the transmission, and many transmission faults set a code and turn on the check engine light. Some vehicles also have a separate transmission warning light. A scan is the first step to finding out why it's on.
My car is stuck in one gear. What does that mean?
Many vehicles go into a fail-safe mode, often called limp mode, when the computer sees a serious problem. The transmission holds one gear so you can get off the road. Get it checked soon, and avoid long drives until you do.
Do I need a rebuild if my transmission is slipping?
Not always. Slipping can come from low fluid, worn-out fluid, a solenoid or an electrical problem, as well as internal wear. Finding out which one is exactly what the diagnosis is for.
Do you give an estimate before you start work?
Yes. After the diagnosis you get a written estimate. Nothing is done without your OK, and if the job changes, we call you first.
