About the 62TE
The 62TE is Chrysler's 6-speed transaxle for front-wheel drive vehicles. It builds on the older 4-speed 41TE and adds a compounder, an extra gearset, to create six speeds. It became the standard automatic in the Grand Caravan and Town & Country with the 3.6L V6, and it also went into the V6 Journey, the Chrysler 200, the Ram C/V and the ProMaster van. Minivans and work vans put a lot of stop-and-go miles on these units, often with a full load.
Why the 62TE fails
The top issue is wear in the low drum inside the compounder. A sealing ring problem wears the drum's lands, fluid leaks past the rings, and the unit loses reverse. Stumbling or shuddering when coming to a stop is another common complaint, often tied to the torque converter clutch and its solenoid. Solenoid packs fail and valve bodies develop cross-leaks, which leads to hard shifts and limp mode. At high mileage the underdrive clutch hub and clutch packs wear out. Heavy loads in vans add heat on top of all of it.
Rebuild, used or reman for a minivan or van
Used 62TEs are everywhere because Chrysler built so many minivans. Most have a lot of stop-and-go miles, and you can't see the low drum or sealing rings without a teardown. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your vehicle, then rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with new sealing rings and soft parts, replacement of worn compounder and hard parts and a torque converter matched to your engine. For a family van or a ProMaster that earns money, that means a known build.

Does a Grand Caravan 62TE fit a ProMaster?
No. The ProMaster, the minivans and the Journey use different versions with different calibration and other details. Your VIN tells us which 62TE to build.
My Journey is AWD. Is the transaxle different?
AWD Journeys add a power transfer unit to drive the rear wheels, which changes the output side of the transaxle. We check your VIN so the unit matches your drive layout.
Will the vehicle need a relearn after install?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Chrysler units usually get a quick learn with a scan tool so the shifts come in right.
How do I get a rebuilt 62TE?
Pay online, and we VIN-check the order before the rebuild starts in Plantation. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.
