Rebuilt 68RFE transmission for Ram 2500 and 3500 6.7L Cummins

A rebuilt 68RFE is the 6-speed automatic behind the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, rebuilt in our Plantation, Florida shop. It is for diesel Ram owners from mid-2007 to 2024 whose truck slips in the upper gears, shudders or goes into limp mode while towing.

About the 68RFE

The 68RFE arrived in mid-2007 with the 6.7L Cummins, replacing the 48RE 4-speed that sat behind the 5.9L Cummins, and became the standard automatic in Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel pickups for well over a decade. It is a 6-speed from Chrysler's RFE family, beefed up for diesel torque. Some 3500 trucks with the high-output Cummins used a different Aisin transmission instead, so the VIN matters. The 68RFE handles daily driving and moderate towing well, but heavy trailers and added power expose its weak points.

Why the 68RFE fails

The overdrive clutch is the most common failure. Its thin clutches don't shed heat well, and the housing can flex, so heavy towing or a tune can burn it up. The solenoid switch valve wears its bore in the valve body, which causes cross-leaks, lower pressure and burnt 4C and overdrive clutches. It can also cause stalling from bad lockup. The valve body develops cross-leaks over time. With more power or heavy loads, the input and output shafts become weak links, and a broken shaft can damage the converter and case.

Rebuilt vs used vs reman for a Cummins

A used 68RFE is a hard sell. Most come out of trucks that towed, some were tuned, and the parts that fail first are buried inside. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We start with your VIN, then rebuild the 68RFE in our Plantation shop with updated overdrive clutch parts, a reconditioned valve body, new soft parts and a torque converter matched to your truck. Shafts and other hard parts are inspected and replaced when they're worn or damaged.

68RFE questions

My Ram 3500 has the high-output Cummins. Does it use the 68RFE?

Many high-output 3500s from 2013 on use an Aisin transmission instead of the 68RFE. Your VIN tells us which one your truck came with, and we check it before we build.

Is a 4x4 68RFE different from a 4x2?

Yes. The rear housing and output shaft differ between 4x2 and 4x4 trucks. We build to your VIN so it bolts up to your driveline.

Will my truck need a relearn after install?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Chrysler units usually get a quick learn with a scan tool, and tuned trucks should have their tune checked too.

How does a rebuilt 68RFE get to me?

Pay online, and we VIN-check the order and rebuild the unit here in Plantation. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
