About the 66RFE
The 66RFE is the automatic Ram used in its gas heavy-duty trucks from 2012 to 2018. It pairs the gearset and many internals of the diesel 68RFE with a case based on the 545RFE, and it sat behind the 5.7L HEMI and, from 2014, the 6.4L HEMI. It went into Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, the Power Wagon and 3500 chassis cabs. These trucks were bought to work, so most 66RFEs have spent their lives pulling trailers, hauling equipment or working job sites.
Why the 66RFE fails
The 66RFE carries many of the same weak points as the 68RFE. The overdrive clutch takes the most abuse in the upper gears, and heavy towing warps and burns it. The solenoid switch valve bore wears in the valve body, and the valve body develops cross-leaks that lower pressure. Low pressure means weaker clutch apply, which means more slipping and more heat. On a gas truck that tows near its limit in Florida heat, that cycle can move fast once it starts.
Rebuild vs used for a HEMI HD truck
Used 66RFEs almost always come out of trucks that worked hard, and there is no way to judge the overdrive clutch or valve body without a teardown. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your truck, then rebuild the 66RFE in our Plantation shop with a reconditioned valve body, updated overdrive clutch parts, new soft parts, a torque converter matched to your engine and worn hard parts replaced. That is a transmission built for the work your truck actually does.

66RFE questions
Is the 66RFE the same as the diesel 68RFE?
No. They share a gearset and many internal parts, but the case, bellhousing and converter are different. We build the 66RFE only for gas trucks that came with it, confirmed by VIN.
Does the Power Wagon use a different 66RFE?
The Power Wagon uses the 66RFE, but details like the output and calibration can vary by truck. Your VIN tells us the exact version, and 2WD and 4WD units differ as well.
Will my Ram need programming after install?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Chrysler units usually get a quick learn with a scan tool.
How does a rebuilt 66RFE get to me?
Pay online, and after the VIN check we rebuild the unit in Plantation. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.
