About the 10L80
The 10L80 is a 10-speed automatic GM developed jointly with Ford, whose version is the 10R80. The two share a basic design, but the transmissions are not interchangeable. GM uses the 10L80 across newer Silverado and Sierra 1500s, the 2021 and newer Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade, and the Camaro SS. Ten close ratios let the engine stay near its best rpm, which helps with towing and fuel use. It is a dense unit with many clutches and a busy valve body, so careful assembly matters.
Why 10L80s act up
Most 10L80 complaints start with harsh, jerky or delayed shifts. A common cause is wear in the valve body, where grooves let pressure leak and the computer can no longer time shifts cleanly. Torque converter shudder is the other big one, and a failing converter clutch can put friction material into the fluid. Once pressure is low or the fluid is dirty, clutch packs begin to slip and overheat. Towing and hot weather speed all of this up. Software updates can smooth some shift complaints, but they do not fix worn parts.
Rebuilt vs used vs reman 10L80
Because the 10L80 is still fairly new, used units often come from wrecked vehicles with unknown histories, and some already carry the valve body wear or converter problems above. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We start with your VIN so the version, drive layout and controls match, then rebuild the unit by hand in our Plantation shop. It gets new soft parts, a torque converter for your application, fixes for the known weak points and any worn hard parts replaced. You know what went into it.

Is the GM 10L80 the same as Ford's 10R80?
No. They came from a joint project and share a basic design, but the cases, controls and many parts differ. We only build the version that matches your VIN.
Will a 10L80 from a Tahoe fit my Silverado?
Not always. Engine, 2WD or 4WD and body style can change the unit and its setup. The VIN check before the build settles it.
Does a rebuilt 10L80 need programming?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. The shift adapts also relearn as the vehicle is driven.
How do I order a rebuilt 10L80 and receive it?
Pay online, and we VIN-check the order before the rebuild starts in Plantation. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.
