Signs yours is failing

  • Engine revs up on the 2-3 or 3-4 shift
  • No 3rd or 4th gear
  • No reverse, or reverse that comes and goes
  • Harsh or late 1-2 shift
  • Dark fluid with a burnt smell

Weak spots we fix

  • 3-4 clutch pack burns up, taking out 3rd and 4th
  • Factory stamped sun shell cracks at the splines, which can take out 3rd, 4th and reverse at once
  • 2-4 band and servo wear, causing slips in 2nd and 4th
  • Boost valve and pressure regulator bore wear that lets line pressure leak away

What's in the rebuild

  • New clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and 2-4 band
  • Updated sun shell in place of the factory stamped part
  • Updated 3-4 clutch parts and valve body repairs for the known pressure leaks
  • Replacement of worn or damaged hard parts found at teardown, like drums, bushings and gears
  • Torque converter matched to your engine
  • New filter and fresh fluid

About the 4L60E

The 4L60E is GM's electronically controlled 4-speed automatic. It grew out of the older 700R4 and served for about twenty years in half-ton pickups, full-size SUVs, the S-10, Colorado, Camaro and Corvette. First gear is low to get a loaded truck moving, and 4th is an overdrive for quiet highway cruising. A computer runs the shifts and torque converter lockup through solenoids in the valve body. There are 2WD and 4WD versions, and the bellhousing, case and tailhousing change with engine and year. That is why we check your VIN before we build one.

Why the 4L60E fails

Most 4L60E failures come from heat and a few weak spots. The 3-4 clutch pack is small for the load it carries, and once it starts to slip it burns up fast. That is why losing 3rd and 4th is so common. The factory sun shell is thin stamped steel and can crack at its splines, which can take out several gears at once. The 2-4 band wears against its drum, and worn valve body bores leak pressure, which speeds up clutch wear. Towing, bigger tires and a hot Florida summer all add heat.

Rebuild, used or reman

Used 4L60Es are easy to find because GM built so many. The catch is that you rarely know how the donor truck was driven or how hot it ran, and the weak parts are inside where you can't see them. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. Our rebuild starts with your VIN so the unit matches your engine, drive layout and wiring. We tear it down, replace the soft parts, fix the known weak points and replace any worn hard parts we find. You pay online, and we build it here in Plantation.

4L60E questions

How do I know a rebuilt 4L60E will fit my truck?

Give us your VIN with the order. We check it before the build so the bellhousing, tailhousing, output shaft and wiring match your engine and drive layout. If anything looks off, we contact you before we start.

Is a 2WD 4L60E different from a 4WD one?

Yes. The 2WD version has a long tailhousing and output shaft that feeds a driveshaft, and the 4WD version has a short output that bolts to the transfer case. They are not swapped without changing parts, so the VIN check matters.

Will my truck need programming after the swap?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Either way, the transmission will adjust its shift feel over the first drives as it learns again.

How does the rebuilt 4L60E get to me?

You pay online, we VIN-check the order and rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop. Then you pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or we ship it by freight. A refundable core deposit applies until your old transmission comes back to us.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
