Signs yours is failing

  • Shudder at steady cruising speeds
  • Harsh or clunky shifts in the lower gears
  • Hard engagement into drive or reverse
  • Slipping or flaring between gears
  • Dark or burnt-smelling fluid

Weak spots we fix

  • Torque converter clutch shudder tied to the original fluid absorbing moisture; GM later released a new fluid and flush procedure
  • Harsh or clunky shifts in the lower gears
  • Converter damage that spreads friction material through the unit when shudder is left too long

What's in the rebuild

  • New clutches, steels, seals and gaskets
  • Replacement of worn or damaged hard parts found at teardown
  • Torque converter for your vehicle, since a damaged converter is often behind 8L90 shudder
  • Updated parts for known 8L90 weak points
  • New filter and the correct updated fluid
  • Written warranty

About the 8L90

The 8L90 is GM's 8-speed automatic for high-torque rear-wheel drive vehicles. It arrived in the 2015 Corvette and soon went into Silverado and Sierra 1500s with the 6.2L V8, the Yukon Denali and Escalade, the Camaro SS and the CTS-V. Some 5.3L trucks got it later. It is compact for an 8-speed, and eight close ratios keep the engine in a useful rev range. The Corvette version mounts at the rear of the car next to the differential, so it is a different unit from the one in a truck.

Why 8L90s shudder and shift hard

The 8L90's best-known problem is torque converter shudder. The original fluid could absorb moisture, and that let the converter clutch grab and slip at cruising speed. GM released a new fluid and a flush procedure, but on many vehicles the converter was already damaged by the time the fix was done. Owners also report harsh or clunky shifts in the lower gears. When the converter clutch breaks down, it sends friction material through the valve body and clutches. At that point a fluid change is no longer enough.

When a rebuild beats a used unit

Most 8L90s were built in the same years that had the shudder problem, and some never got the fluid update. You can't tell from the outside whether a used unit's converter has shed material into the valve body. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your vehicle, then rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with new soft parts, a torque converter for your application and the correct fluid, and we replace worn hard parts. Truck and Corvette 8L90s are different units, and the VIN check keeps that straight.

8L90 questions

Will a truck 8L90 fit my Corvette?

No. The C7 Corvette's 8L90 mounts at the rear of the car, and the truck and car units are built differently. Send your VIN and we build the one your vehicle takes.

My 8L90 shudders. Do I need a full rebuild?

Not always. If the shudder is caught early, a fluid exchange with GM's updated fluid sometimes fixes it. If it has gone on a long time, or the unit also slips or shifts hard, the converter and clutches are usually damaged and a rebuild is the better fix.

Do I need programming after installing a rebuilt 8L90?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. The transmission also relearns its shift feel as you drive, so the first few days can feel a little different.

How is a rebuilt 8L90 delivered?

Pay online, and we check your VIN before the build starts in our Plantation shop. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
