About the 6L90

The 6L90 is the heavy-duty sibling of the 6L80. It shares the same basic 6-speed layout but has more clutch capacity and stronger internal parts so it can take more torque. GM put it behind the 6.0L gas V8 in Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks, and later behind the 6.6L gas V8. It also went into Express and Savana 2500 and 3500 vans, plus high-output cars like the Cadillac CTS-V and Camaro ZL1. Most of them live hard lives pulling trailers or hauling cargo all day.

What wears out a 6L90

Work is the short answer. Vans carry weight all day with lots of stop-and-go, and HD pickups pull trailers for hours. That heat breaks down the fluid and the torque converter's lockup clutch, which leads to shudder and debris. The 3-5-R clutch, a known issue on the 6L80, is also a wear point here. Once pressure drops in the valve body, clutches start to slip, and slipping makes even more heat. A rebuild resets the cycle with new friction material, a good converter and fixes for the known weak points.

Rebuild or used for a work vehicle?

When a van or HD truck is down, the first used unit you find can look tempting. The trouble is that most used 6L90s come out of vehicles that worked just as hard as yours, and there is no way to see the clutch packs from outside. A reman is built to a general spec. Our rebuilds are VIN-checked, so the case, output and controls match your truck or van, and every unit is torn down and rebuilt by hand in our Plantation shop. For fleets, that means fewer surprises after install.

6L90 questions

Is a 6L90 the same as a 6L80?

No. They look alike, but the 6L90 has more clutch capacity and different internal parts, so one is not swapped for the other. We confirm which one your vehicle needs from the VIN.

Do vans and pickups use the same 6L90?

Not always. Express and Savana vans, 2WD trucks and 4WD trucks use different output and tailhousing setups. Send your VIN and we build the version that fits.

Will my truck or van need programming after install?

Like the 6L80, the 6L90 has its control module inside the unit. Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does.

How does a rebuilt 6L90 get to my shop or yard?
