About the 6L80

The 6L80 is a 6-speed automatic GM introduced in the mid-2000s for rear-wheel drive trucks, SUVs and performance cars. It went into Silverado and Sierra 1500s, the Tahoe, Yukon and Suburban, the Escalade, the Camaro V8 and the C6 Corvette. The transmission computer, called the TEHCM, lives inside the unit on the valve body, so the gears and the controls come as one package. Shifts are clutch-to-clutch, with no bands. It is a smooth, capable unit when the fluid stays clean, but it does not forgive heat or dirty fluid.

Why the 6L80 fails

The most common complaint is torque converter shudder. The lockup clutch inside the converter wears and glazes, and a worn converter sheds debris that travels through the pump, valve body and clutch packs. The 3-5-R clutch is the other weak spot. Its wave plate and drum can crack, which often shows up first as a harsh 1-2 shift and later as a loss of 3rd, 5th and reverse. Pressure problems in the valve body and TEHCM make each of these worse. Towing in Florida heat speeds all of it up.

Rebuild, used or reman for a 6L80

Used 6L80s are common, but many come out of trucks that already had converter shudder, which means debris may already be inside. A remanufactured unit is built to a standard spec and may not match your truck's exact setup. We start with your VIN, then rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with new soft parts, updated 3-5-R parts and a torque converter matched to your engine, and we replace worn hard parts. Because the 6L80 carries its own computer, getting the right version for your truck matters as much as the parts inside.

6L80 questions

Which 6L80 does my vehicle use?

Several versions exist across trucks, SUVs and cars, with different cases, output shafts and control modules. Your VIN tells us which one you have, and we check it before we start the build.

Does 2WD or 4WD change the 6L80 I need?

Yes. 2WD units have a long tailhousing and output shaft, and 4WD units bolt to a transfer case. The VIN check sorts this out so the unit you get bolts in.

Will my truck need programming after a rebuilt 6L80 goes in?

The 6L80's control module sits inside the transmission, so this question comes up a lot. Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does.

How do ordering and delivery work?

You pay online, we VIN-check the order and rebuild the unit here in Plantation. Then you pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or we ship it by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
