About the 4L80E
GM built the 4L80E for heavy work. It is based on the Turbo 400, one of GM's toughest 3-speed automatics, with an overdrive gear and electronic controls added. From the early 1990s into the late 2000s it went into 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups, Suburban 2500s, full-size vans and the Hummer H1, plus plenty of commercial vehicles. It is bigger and heavier than the 4L60E and handles much more torque, which is why fleets and towing customers still rely on it. Early and late cases differ in cooler line location and other details, so we match yours by VIN.
Why a 4L80E gives out
The 4L80E is strong, but work trucks put a lot of hours and heat through it. The sun shell can break, which leaves drive working and reverse gone. Wear at the boost valve and pressure regulator lets line pressure run too high or too low, and either one wears clutches out early. Torque converters in tow rigs wear their lockup clutch and start to shudder. Solenoids and the internal wiring also fail with age. Heat ties it all together: once the fluid cooks, the friction material glazes and starts to slip.
Rebuilt vs used vs reman for a work truck
A used 4L80E pulled from a 20-year-old work truck is a real gamble. Many spent their lives towing, and the unit may already be tired inside. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. Our rebuilds start with your VIN, then a full teardown in our Plantation shop. We replace the soft parts, fix the valve body wear these units are known for and swap out any worn hard parts. For a fleet, that means the unit you install matches the truck it goes in, not just the model name on the order.

4L80E questions
Is the 4L80E the same in every GM HD truck?
No. Case details, cooler line location, bellhousing and output shaft differ by year and engine, and some 8.1L and diesel vans used the related 4L85E instead. We check your VIN before we build so the unit bolts in.
Do you build 2WD and 4WD 4L80E units?
Yes. The 2WD version uses a long tailhousing for the driveshaft and the 4WD version bolts to a transfer case, so they are not interchangeable as-is. Your VIN tells us which one to build.
Does a 4L80E need a relearn after install?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Your installer should also flush or replace the cooler, since old debris in the lines can damage a fresh unit.
How do I get a rebuilt 4L80E?
Order and pay online, and we build it in our Plantation shop after the VIN check. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies until your old unit comes back.
How long does it take?
Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.
What is the core deposit?
A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
