Rebuilt 10R140 transmission for 2020 and newer Ford Super Duty

A rebuilt 10R140 is Ford's heavy-duty 10-speed automatic, rebuilt in our Plantation, Florida shop for newer Super Duty trucks. It is for owners of 2020 and newer F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups with the 6.7L Power Stroke or a big gas V8 whose truck is slipping, losing gears or shifting poorly.

About the 10R140

The 10R140 replaced the 6R140 in Ford's Super Duty lineup starting in 2020. It is a heavy-duty 10-speed built for the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 7.3L gas V8, and later the 6.8L gas V8. Ten ratios give these trucks a deep first gear for starting heavy loads and tall top gears for highway cruising. It shares its basic layout ideas with the 10R80 but is a much larger, stronger unit. Many of these trucks tow for a living, so the 10R140 works harder than most transmissions on the road.

Known 10R140 failures

The best-known problem is in the CDF drum. On earlier units, a sleeve inside the drum can slip out of place and partly block the fluid passages, so the transmission can't hold pressure in some gears. Owners usually notice slipping or lost upper gears, often 7th through 10th. Ford addressed it with a service bulletin and an updated drum. Valve body leaks have also been reported on early trucks. Heavy towing and heat make both problems show up sooner, and slipping quickly adds clutch damage on top.

Rebuild vs used for a newer Super Duty

A used 10R140 from an early truck may still carry the original drum, and there is no way to check it without a teardown. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your truck, then rebuild the 10R140 by hand in our Plantation shop with updated CDF drum parts when needed, new soft parts, replacement of any worn hard parts and a torque converter matched to your engine. For a truck that earns its keep, that is a unit with a known build.

10R140 questions

Do diesel and gas Super Duty trucks use the same 10R140?

No. The 6.7L diesel and the gas V8 trucks use different converters, bellhousings and calibrations, and 2WD and 4WD outputs differ as well. We confirm the version from your VIN.

Can you tell whether my truck has the early CDF drum?

Not from the outside. The drum can only be inspected with the transmission apart, which happens on every rebuild we do. If your unit has the early design, we use updated parts.

Will my truck need programming after install?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Plan on some easy miles while the shifts relearn before you hook up a heavy trailer.

How does a rebuilt 10R140 get to me?

Pay online, and after the VIN check we rebuild the unit in Plantation. You pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or we ship it by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
