About the 4R70W and 4R75

The 4R70W is Ford's electronic 4-speed automatic that grew out of the older AOD. The W stands for wide ratio, meaning a lower first gear for better launches. It went into F-150s, Mustangs, Crown Victorias, Grand Marquis, Town Cars, V8 Explorers and Expeditions. The 4R75W and 4R75E are later, stronger updates of the same design, used in F-150s and the big Ford and Lincoln sedans until 2011. Police and taxi Crown Vics put a lot of miles on these units, and plenty are still running.

Why they wear out

Most 4R70W failures come down to wear, heat and hydraulics. The overdrive band holds 2nd and 4th, and when it wears, the unit slips in those gears. The servo bores in the aluminum case can wear, which bleeds off the pressure that applies the bands. Worn pressure regulator and boost valves lower line pressure, which cooks clutches over time. Torque converter clutch wear shows up as a shudder at cruise. Trucks that tow and cars that idle for hours see the most heat, and a Florida summer adds to it.

Rebuild or used for an older Ford

Used 4R70Ws are everywhere, but most are 20 or more years old and nobody knows how they were serviced. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We start with your VIN so the bellhousing, output and electronics match your engine and year. Then we rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with new soft parts, updated valve body parts, a torque converter matched to your engine and any worn hard parts replaced. For a clean Mustang or a Town Car you want to keep, you know what went into it.

4R70W / 4R75 questions

What is the difference between a 4R70W and a 4R75?

The 4R75W and 4R75E are later updates of the 4R70W with stronger parts and changes to the controls. Which one fits depends on the year and engine, and we confirm that from your VIN.

Does my F-150 need the 2WD or 4WD version?

They differ at the back: 2WD trucks use a long tailhousing and output shaft, and 4WD trucks bolt to a transfer case. We build the one your VIN calls for.

Will I need programming after install?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. These older Fords also depend on a healthy range sensor on the side of the case, so it's worth having your installer check it.

How do I get a rebuilt 4R70W or 4R75?

Pay online, and we VIN-check the order and rebuild it in our Plantation shop. Then you pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or we ship it by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
