About the 10R80

The 10R80 is Ford's 10-speed automatic, developed jointly with GM, whose version is the 10L80. It started in the 2017 F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost and spread to most F-150s, the Mustang, Expedition, Navigator, Ranger and Transit. Ten gears let the engine stay close to its best rpm for towing and fuel economy. The unit is compact for its gear count, so clutch packs and fluid passages are packed tightly together. That makes careful assembly and clean fluid more important than on older, simpler transmissions.

Why 10R80s have trouble

The most discussed failure is the CDF drum. On earlier units, a press-fit bushing inside the drum can move out of place, a seal then fails and pressure leaks away. The result is slipping or lost gears, and it tends to show up on trucks that tow. Ford revised the drum in later production. Valve body wear and leaks cause shift flare and delayed engagement. Harsh and erratic shifting has also drawn a lot of owner complaints. Software updates help some shift complaints, but not worn or failed parts.

Is a used 10R80 a good bet?

Many used 10R80s on the market were built in the same years as the early CDF drum, and you can't see that part without taking the unit apart. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your vehicle, then tear the transmission down in our Plantation shop, replace the soft parts, update the CDF drum parts when needed, replace worn hard parts and pair it with a torque converter matched to your engine. You get a unit built for the vehicle it goes in.

10R80 questions

Is Ford's 10R80 the same as GM's 10L80?

No. The two came out of a shared program, but the cases, controls and many parts are different. We build only the version your VIN calls for.

Does a Mustang 10R80 fit an F-150?

No. Bellhousing, output and calibration differ across the F-150, Mustang, Expedition, Ranger and Transit, and 4x2 and 4x4 versions differ too. The VIN check settles it.

Will I need programming after a rebuilt 10R80 goes in?

Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. The 10R80 also relearns its shifts as you drive, so give it some miles to settle.
