About the 6R80

The 6R80 is Ford's 6-speed automatic for rear-wheel drive trucks, SUVs and cars. It is based on a ZF 6-speed design, built by Ford, and it took over F-150 duty in 2009. From there it went into the Expedition and Navigator, the 2011 to 2017 Mustang and the Transit van. The speed sensors and internal wiring sit on a part called the lead frame, which mounts to the valve body. A healthy 6R80 shifts smoothly and tows well, which is why so many are still on the road.

Common 6R80 problems

Many 6R80 shift complaints trace back to the valve body and lead frame. The lead frame carries the speed sensors and solenoid connections, and when it fails the truck can shift erratically, hunt for gears or drop into a fail-safe mode. The solenoids are sensitive to dirty fluid, and debris can make them stick. Wear in the pressure regulator valve bore causes pressure swings. Torque converter shudder is common at higher mileage. When these faults go on too long, the clutch packs pay the price.

Rebuild, used or reman

Used 6R80s are easy to find, but it is hard to know whether the valve body and lead frame are healthy, and those are the parts that cause the most trouble. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We start with your VIN, since F-150, Expedition, Mustang and Transit units differ. Then we rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with new soft parts, attention to the valve body and lead frame, a torque converter matched to your engine and any worn hard parts replaced.

6R80 questions

Is the Mustang 6R80 the same as the F-150 unit?

No. The case, bellhousing, output and calibration differ between the Mustang, F-150, Expedition and Transit. We check your VIN before the build so you get the right version.

Is there a difference between 4x2 and 4x4 units?

Yes. The 4x4 unit bolts to a transfer case, and the 4x2 unit uses a longer output and tailhousing. The VIN check covers it.

Does the 6R80 need programming after install?

On many Ford units, the valve body carries calibration data the truck's computer needs, so this comes up often with the 6R80. Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does.

How do I order a rebuilt 6R80?

Pay online, and we VIN-check the order before the rebuild starts in Plantation. Then pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.

How long does it take?

Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.

What is the core deposit?

A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
