About the 5R110W
The 5R110W, sold as TorqShift, replaced the 4R100 in Ford's Super Duty trucks for the 2003 model year. It is a 5-speed heavy-duty automatic that went behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesels and the 5.4L and 6.8L gas engines through 2010, and into the 6.0L Excursion. The extra gear and better controls were a real step up for towing. It is still a strong unit, but most have now worked for well over a decade, and some have lived behind tuned diesels.
Where the 5R110W breaks
The torque converter is the most common failure point, especially in trucks that tow heavy or have added power. When it fails, it sends debris into the pump, valve body, solenoids and cooler. That debris can score the pump and drop line pressure, and low pressure burns clutches. The low/reverse retaining ring can pop out of its groove and cause slipping in reverse. Pressure switches and a worn manual valve can cause pressure loss and slow engagement. One failure tends to lead to the next.
Rebuild vs used for a Super Duty
Used 5R110Ws come out of the same hard-working trucks, and a unit that sat behind a failed converter may have debris in every passage. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. Our rebuild starts with your VIN, then a full teardown in our Plantation shop, a torque converter matched to your engine, new soft parts and updates for the known weak points. Your installer should also flush or replace the cooler, so old debris does not follow the new unit in.

5R110W questions
Do gas and diesel Super Duty trucks use the same 5R110W?
They share a design, but converters, bellhousings and calibrations differ between the gas and diesel versions. We confirm the right one from your VIN before the build.
Is there a 2WD and 4WD difference?
Yes. The rear housing and output change between 2WD and 4WD trucks. The VIN check makes sure the unit bolts to your driveline.
Will the truck need programming after install?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. Tuned trucks should have their tune reviewed too, since it controls shift and lockup pressure.
