About the 4R100
The 4R100 is Ford's heavy-duty 4-speed automatic from the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is an updated version of the E4OD, and it went behind the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel and the big gas engines in 1999 to 2003 Super Duty trucks, Excursions and heavier E-Series vans. It also went into 5.4L Expeditions and Navigators and the F-150 SVT Lightning. It is a large, heavy unit built for load, and many are still working in trucks that were paid off years ago.
Why 4R100s fail
Heat is the main enemy. Many of these trucks tow, and the factory cooling was not always up to it, so fluid breaks down and clutch packs glaze. The solenoid pack can fail and cause late, harsh or missing shifts, often starting with a high-rpm 2-3 shift. A known quirk is bolts on the lower valve body backing out, which can leave the truck with no drive or reverse while park still holds. Add high mileage and bigger tires, and many 4R100s are due for a full rebuild rather than a patch.
Rebuild vs used for a 7.3L truck
A good 7.3L truck is worth keeping, and a used 4R100 is usually as old and as worked as the one coming out. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We VIN-check your truck, then rebuild the 4R100 in our Plantation shop with new soft parts, replacement of worn hard parts and updates for the known weak points, plus a torque converter matched to your engine. You get a transmission built for the engine and drive layout in your truck, backed by a written warranty.

4R100 questions
Will a 4R100 from a gas truck fit my 7.3L diesel?
Not as-is. Diesel and gas units use different bellhousings and converters, and some internal parts differ. We check your VIN and build the version your truck needs.
Do 2WD and 4WD Super Duty trucks use the same 4R100?
The core of the transmission is shared, but the rear housing and output differ between 2WD and 4WD. The VIN check makes sure you get the right one.
Does a rebuilt 4R100 need programming?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. We also suggest a clean or new cooler, since these trucks often run hot.
How is a rebuilt 4R100 shipped?
Pay online, and after the VIN check we rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or we ship it by freight. A refundable core deposit applies until your old unit comes back.
