About the 6F50 and 6F55
The 6F50 is Ford's 6-speed transaxle for V6 front-wheel drive and AWD vehicles, and the 6F55 is the stronger version used behind EcoBoost V6 engines. It came out of a joint program with GM, whose version is the 6T70 and 6T75. The 6F50 family went into the Edge, Explorer, Flex, Taurus, Police Interceptor Utility and Lincoln MKX, MKT and MKS. EcoBoost versions of the Taurus, Flex and Explorer use the 6F55. AWD models add a power transfer unit on the side of the transaxle that sends power to the rear.
Why the 6F50 fails
The 3-5-R drum is the number one weak spot. A wavy steel plate inside it acts like a spring, and the original part can break under pressure. When it goes, the vehicle loses 3rd, 5th and reverse. On earlier units, the internal mode switch that tells the computer which gear you selected can fail and cause a range of shifting and engagement problems. Dirty fluid wears the torque converter, and worn sealing rings and bushings let pressure leak. Heavy three-row loads and police duty add a lot of heat.
Rebuild, used or reman
Used 6F50s are easy to find, but most still have the original 3-5-R plate and many earlier units still have the original mode switch. A remanufactured unit is built to a general spec. We start with your VIN, since the 6F50 and 6F55 and the FWD and AWD versions differ. Then we rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop with an updated 3-5-R wave plate, attention to the mode switch on earlier units, new soft parts, a torque converter matched to your engine and worn hard parts replaced.

6F50 / 6F55 questions
Do I need a 6F50 or a 6F55?
Most naturally aspirated V6 models use the 6F50, while the higher-torque EcoBoost V6 models use the 6F55. Your VIN tells us which one, and we check it before we build.
Is the power transfer unit part of the transaxle?
No. On AWD models the power transfer unit bolts to the side of the transaxle as a separate part. We rebuild the transaxle; if your transfer unit leaks or is noisy, have your installer look at it during the swap.
Will my vehicle need programming after install?
Some units need a relearn or programming after install; we'll tell you if yours does. The shift feel also relearns over the first drives.
How is a rebuilt 6F50 or 6F55 delivered?
Pay online, and after the VIN check we rebuild the unit in our Plantation shop. Pick it up at 631 S State Rd 7 or have it shipped by freight. A refundable core deposit applies.
How long does it take?
Units are built to order. Most are ready about 4 to 6 weeks after payment. Need it sooner? Call us, we can often work something out.
What is the core deposit?
A refundable deposit added at payment. Send your old transmission back to the shop and we refund it to your card once it's checked in.
